Visa & Entry: Getting into China
144-hour (6-day) Transit Visa-Free: Available in 27 Chinese cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Nanjing. You must arrive from one country and depart to a different country. Perfect for a focused 5-6 day trip covering 2 cities. Most nationalities qualify.
15-day Visa-Free (new!): As of 2024, citizens of France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Malaysia, Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Australia, New Zealand, Poland, and several others can enter China visa-free for up to 15 days. This is the easiest option — just show up with your passport.
Standard Tourist Visa (L Visa): If your country isn't on the visa-free list, apply at your nearest Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC). Processing takes 4-7 business days. Required: passport (6+ months validity), completed form, passport photo, flight + hotel bookings, itinerary. Cost: approximately 30-150 USD depending on nationality and visa type.
Pro tip: Book refundable flights and hotels for your visa application, then adjust once approved. Always check the latest policy — China's visa rules change frequently and have been getting more relaxed.

Golden Triangle: Beijing → Xi'an
Days 1-2 (Beijing): Arrive Beijing. Day 1: tang suit fitting in a hutong tailor shop (Nanluoguxiang). Day 2: Forbidden City tour, wear your tang suit for photos at Jingshan Park at sunset. Evening: Peking duck in Qianmen.
Days 3-4 (Beijing → Xi'an by train): Morning high-speed train (4.5 hrs). Afternoon: settle into hotel near city wall. Evening: walk the Muslim Quarter.

Days 11-13 (Chengdu, 3.5 hrs by train): Day 11: travel + Jinli Ancient Street Hanfu stroll. Day 12: tea ceremony in traditional teahouse, Shu embroidery workshop. Day 13: panda base (morning), free afternoon.
Day 14: Departure from Chengdu.
Quick Hanfu Fix: Xi'an Deep Dive
Day 1: Arrive Xi'an. Evening: Bell Tower + Drum Tower lit up at night. Muslim Quarter street food.
Day 2: Morning: Hanfu rental fitting + hair/makeup (budget 1 hr). Full day in costume: city wall (3-4 hrs, rent a bike). Late afternoon: change dynasty style, head to Daming Palace for golden hour.

When to Go
🌸 Spring (March-May)
Best overall. Comfortable 15-25dC. Cherry blossoms in Xi'an, peonies in Luoyang, West Lake in Hangzhou at its most beautiful. Book ahead for May holidays (first week).
🍂 Autumn (September-November)
Second best. Clear skies, golden light for photos. Xi'an city wall at sunset is spectacular. Avoid first week of October (National Day — extremely crowded everywhere).
❄️ Winter (December-February)
Beijing can hit -10dC — tang suit under a coat works. Xi'an is milder. Fewer tourists = empty photos. Chinese New Year (late Jan/Feb): festive but everything closes for 3-5 days.
☀️ Summer (June-August)
Hot and humid (30-38dC). Tang dynasty chest-high ruqun is lightweight and comfortable. Morning and evening photoshoots recommended. July-August is domestic school holiday — sites are busy.
